Loading 185 lswc 45acp and have no data?
I am loading up some 185gr lswc 45acp tonight and the only data I can find is for jacketed. I know lead can take a little less powder. I am using universal right now and the data says 6.0gr is the low. I was thinking about starting at 5.8 but this has me cautious because it is the starting load for 200gr lswc.

Google turned up these links and more but it seems safe to say to either use jacketed data and drop down a couple of tenths or use 200 lead swc data.

Re: Loading 185 lswc 45acp and have no data?
A hardliner would advise only to use know loads from a verifiable source. In general aspects casts my be different with regard to bore fit, bearing surface and obturation. If hesitant find a load or a new can of powder.
However I just glanced at a couple of the provided links and they seem to jive with what I've done. I've used jacketed data but started at starting loads and slowly worked up. If going this route notice advice not to go under the COL of the jacketed load for pressure issues. I'd probably start with the known data for the 200 grain swc on Hodgdons site and work up. But thats just me.
Edit: The Lyman cast handbook is a good one for reference.Last edited by cephas; July 3rd, 2013 at 12:33 PM.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

I started with the 5.8 and I had not issue's the casings were thrown slightly forward. 6.0 is were I am staying. I should have done 5.9 as well but i hit 6.0 on the first adjustment of my powder measure and just loaded 10 and adjusted to 5.8.
