Ammo or gun issue?
I have a quick question; moderators, please move this if it belongs in a more specialized forum.
Bought a Ruger SP101 new. Went to the range yesterday. Shot a box of 50 of 38 LRN, and 35 rounds of 357s.
Everything went well except for one of the 38 shells. My dad was shooting the offending round, single action, and it went 'click'. I waited, then took out the round and looked. It appeared to me that the primer strike was deep enough. I put it back in the cylinder, tried again, and nothing happened a second try.
All the other rounds went off fine. I can't remember the brand of 38, it was just range stuff with round nose lead.
Should I conclude this was a bad primer/ammo? What are the odds that the problem is the new Ruger? This is my carry piece.
Thoughts / comments are welcome.

Re: Ammo or gun issue?
Sounds like a dud round since all the other rounds fired ok and the primer hit was good. I wouldn't worry about the gun. The SP101 is a good carry gun. I own two and neither has given me any problems at all in the years I've carried/shot them.

Re: Ammo or gun issue?
Thanks.
Since I don't reload shells, and ammo is costly, I'm not in a position to keep putting a zillion rounds through my new gun to reassure my concerns that the problem is not the gun itself.
Does the fact that the offending round failed to fire twice give more evidence that its the ammo and not the ruger?

Re: Ammo or gun issue?
Make a vid of the round, take it apart while recording, empty out the powder on a sheet of white paper, put all parts on the same paper, transfer vid to dvd, send the dvd to ammo mfg to let them know that one of their products was defective and caused you concern.
Government 99 and 44/100 % pure bullshit.

Re: Ammo or gun issue?
Sounds completely ammo related.
Don't worry about it.
You are seeing the hammer hits to the primer.
That indicates the gun parts are doing their job correctly.
Gun = good
Ammo = bad (That round anyhow.)
This shows you why people spend more on ammo they plan to use for carry (AKA protect their lives and the lives of those around them.)
Enjoy the SP101.
We have one also.
God bless!!

Re: Ammo or gun issue?
Ranges have been known to buy reman. ammo, iffy quality, the Ruger 101 is an excellent revolver.
