Simultaneously Impressed and depressed!
Yes it's a good news bad news joke, sort of.
I've finally had enough of my digital scale! No matter what I do the damn thing will "float" 0.2grs with the charge just sitting there. So I brought out my old Ohaus 5-0-5 (the thing dates from the early 70s) and started to use that and I'll be dipped the little handle broke off the pan and the scale won't balance or level correctly without it so the handle now sits under the pan.
Ohaus no longer makes these scales and it was originally sold by RCBS, so I sent an email out to RCBS to see if they offer a replace pan. And unbelievably I get a reply, they do, the 5-0-5 scale is still offered and they're sending me a pan as a replacement free! And it is listed a $20 repair part I found later!
And the good news part is there are still companies extant today that take pride in their products and offer outstanding service to customers! So no one ever needs to question the quality of their products or service!
The unfortunate part is the new pan is too heavy and the old scale will not adjust enough to allow its use! Maybe I use my Dremel tool to shave 4 grains of metal off the new man! Whaddya think?

I always use 2 scales myself. Old beam scale and a digital. I have a cheapo Frankford digital that has been ok, seems whenever it starts to drift, it needs a new battery. I usually plug it in though. I had a Cabelas digital that was the same way, but it stopped working all of a sudden. But you can rely on an old beam scale. Zero...set weight and done."Disperse you Rebels! Damn you! If you do not have a good set of scale check weights, get some.

Re: Simultaneously Impressed and depressed!
RCBS was always good at standing behind their product. The new stuff is a little differnect from the original. I ordered a hand primer from then that did not accept the old shell holder. RCBS was going to replace the shell holders, but when I suggested modifying a plastic part of the primer tool the rep said that would work fine. Good company.

The pan cradle is weighted on most scales . Remove the screw on the pan holder and remove some lead shot and then retry . Hope this helps

Re: Simultaneously Impressed and depressed!
Same think happened to me. I lost (my fault) the pan and the arm it sits in. Iinquired about a replacement. They sent them to me for free! Companies like RCBS and Dillon are top notch.
My replacement pan also came with a small bag of lean shot to tare it. Like the other poster said unscrew the bottom and take a little out.

Don't use them around fluorescent lamps , or the outlet they are plugged into....that alone can cause your wandering zero.

Re: Simultaneously Impressed and depressed!
Same thing happened to me.
The little brass handle just gave up one day.
Bent it in half and squished it on the side of the pan.
That was like 15 years ago.
Never thought about adjusting the weight in the bottom of the pan cradle.
Good thought. Please feel free to visit a forum that I moderate:
