While the missive was making the rounds, Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery, approached Mr. O’Brien about the possibility of presiding as speaker over a Democratic-run House. A series of hastily scheduled meetings on New Year’s Day and Tuesday led to the last-minute nomination of Mr. O’Brien.

Some Republicans hinted the drama might not be over, however.

After the speaker’s election, Mr. Caltagirone sat in on the House Republicans’ caucus, a sign that he might jump parties. That would give the Republicans a 102-101 majority unless the Democrats can convince a Republican to switch.
