    Default Refurbishing Pachy Grips

    Just picked up a new pair of Pachmayr grips for my Ruger that I really enjoy the feel of. I got a great deal on them used as well. However, they are a well worn pair. No deep gouges or cuts, but some scratches and abraisions here and there, plus they have that gray haze on the checkering even new Pachys seem to have. So, how do I go about slicking them back up?

    I was thinking of trying some super fine grit sandpaper to even the areas out a touch, then use some polishing paste with a rag and some elbow grease to smooth it up. As for the graying, not really sure what to do, short of getting a plastic buffing wheel and trying that.

    Thoughts?

    For reference, these are grips;

    Are those for a Security Six, and if so, who is carrying them?

    I would offer this: Don't use anything abrasive on your rubber grips. Once you break the polished surface on them they will never shine again. {don't try this at home} I have used lighter fluid on dirty ones, and I have used non abrasive household cleaners, no ammonia or acid, to get the grip scum off of them. Theyre for the GP100. Some grips are interchangable, some arent. I would guess, from looking at them, that they would work on a SecSix. My search-fu is poor, but if you could hook me up with a pic of what your frame looks like grips-off, I could give you a better guess.

    Well, I found a way to get them looking and feeling better, but a bit different. I first used cleaners and soft rags to bring them out, but the scratches were still an eyesore. So I sprayed a bit of RemOil onto them, and gently rubbed them down with some fine synthetic scuff sheet. This smoothed all the gouges right out, without changing the shape of the grip at all, but it did drastically alter the finish. It was originally supposed to be a gloss black, but after the scuff pad, it was a flat, uniform dark gray. Looks good to my eyes on the gun, and is just fine in the hand, but YMMV.

    If you decide you want them black again, go to the auto parts and get some 'BLACK AGAIN'. It's for restroring the black on rubber bumpers and whatnot. I had a pair of Pachys that were getting some gray spots and it made them look new again. It doesn't make them slick like the various vinyl treatments but leaves them tacky. All I did was spray it on, brush with a very soft bristle and wipe with a clean rag.

    After a trip to the range and a day of draw practice, I just want to say these are excellent grips for the GP100. Theyre slimmer, so carry is a bit nicer, although it has dropped my draw speed from my galco minimalist holster a touch. That should resolve after a few more practice sessions to get used to them. It definatley helps when firing, as the finger grooves help keep my grip repeatable, with less adjustment once I take hold. Shot a sub-2" 6rnd group @ 25', so theyre definatley not hurting my accuracy any.

    Hmm, I always used gun oil to clean and restore the original look of the grips.Just wipe it dry afterwards.

    Waterless hand cleaner and an old toothbrush makes the gray black.

    +1 Try Gunk - it works wonders.
    I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.
