Default Was given an old shotgun yesterday

My wife and I were over the in laws yesterday and my father in law came out and handed me a rifle case. He said that he hoped I will take care of it the way he did. It was his fathers so he's passing it down to the person he feels would appreciate it the most.
I open the case and pull out a winchester model 12 16 gauge shotgun. Sweet! I did some research last night and found out it was made in 1939.
He also gave me 2 boxes of shells to go with it.

    A treasure! I'm jealous.

16ga is a treat but tough to find. Enjoy!

My uncle Ray willed me a Browning in 16ga - I should dust it off.

1928 was the cutoff date for 2 3/4" shells. earlier guns were 2 9/16" shells. the 16 was built on the 20 gauge frame, and is often seen with a 26" factory full choke barrel, as on the 1925 production gun that i have.

definitely my favourite shotgun, at about 5 pounds loaded.

Fantastic gift! Model 12's have a habit of multiplying. I learned to shoot trap using a 12 gauge back in the sixties. Yes, I'm an old man and since we tend to repeat our favorite stories, I won't bore you with my ones about the Model 12.

It looks like it was well loved all these years. Enjoy it and let us know how it shoots.

Awesome gun! Carefull though with those 16ga. shells keeping them loose in a pocket, they can very easily get mixed up with loose 12ga. And I'm sure you know what could happen. I't didn't happen to me! really!

Grats on the gift and enjoy. I haven't fired a 16 gauge since i was a teenager. i think you will enjoy shooting it. i like 12 gauges but i enjoy the lighter recoil of 16's and 20's
