    Generally speaking what you describe isn't legal. There are exceptions, such as going to or from a range, but it's not as simple as just "unload it and put it in the trunk and you're good". Transporting a handgun (or SBS or SBR) in a vehicle, even unloaded, is "carry" in a vehicle and requires holding a license or meeting another exception.
