    Default AR Buffer tubes

I'm working on my first AR build (a retro 601 style) and I have a question about buffer tubes. I haven't had any luck finding an A1 buffer tube (w/o the wrench flats) so I've been thinking of just getting a new buffer tube and using that. After all it's not going to be visible when the thing is assembled so why not? While looking over the various websites that sell parts I notice that they all sell a short spacer for the buffer tube.

My question is, will I need this spacer if I buy a new buffer tube to use w/ my old no trapdoor A1 stock?
