See that and raise you: phones with voice prompts requesting alpha numerical input... You know, Number Please? Nickel coffee and nickle pay phone calls. Then there's the Wilkie Button when he ran against FDR, War Bond drives and those ration books, headlights painted half black. (is that trip necessary?) and air raids to go with those, were they "air raid" wardens? Remember the WWI helmets they wore Karl? And then, sadly, there were the Gold Star mothers and the effects of the sinkings off the Eastern coast line by U-boats. And then, VE day and VJ day.

Finally! Another pre-boomer. Oh yeah, all them things. Granddad always had an "A" gas sticker on his windshield because he worked for the B&O Railroad. Wardens had old steel "tommie" helmets painted white and white armbands. My paternal grandma had a four star flag in her window, fortunately all blue stars. Maternal gram only had one son and he worked at the Glenn L. Martin aircraft plant and was exempted from draft. My father went in the Marines in '36 and was a guard at the Hindenberg wreckage at Lakehurst (my bro & I still have pieces of aluminum from the tail). He went into the Army in 1940 and was at Hickam when the attack occurred.

I got my dad's reel to reel sitting on my desk connecting dust, right on top of the 8 track player. I remember playing with both as a kid, john denver and the muppets sing christmas on the 8 track.

I still have my dads reel to reel!

I remember listening to Marty Robins singing Gun Fighter Ballads on my dads Reel to Reel. That thing was all that.

Buying a single song on a 45. Other side of the 45 always had a crappy song on it.

Coming home in forth grade and finding directions on how to fix my own dinner cause mom and dad had to work that day. So what if I was only 10. God Forbid you do that now.

When I was 10 yrs old I babysat all day in the summer from 6am to 7pm a 2yr old, a 1 yr old, and 6 week old twins, for .50 cents an hour. On Saturdays it was more, .75 cents an hour. Now don't even think about doing that now. Its gotta be a "spa" day care that cost you $500.00 a week. I had a babysitter once for my son when he was 4, and I paid $22.00 an hour that was 17 years ago.

My brother had a reel-to-reel growing up, and I still use our record player with the high-tech surround sound.

Damn. I guess you kids don't want to hear about victory gardens, blackouts, scrap drives, Red Cross bandage wrapping parties, Walter Winchell, Gabriel Heatter, Loose Lips Sink Ships, weekly fat, newspaper, rag and bone collections or rationing sugar, meat and gasoline, or women donating their long hair for use in bomb sights, block air raid wardens, young ladies volunteering at the local USO, the Andrews Sisters, Comin' In On A Wing And A Prayer, The White Cliffs of Dover, or Give a Seat to a Soldier.

I wasn't there, but that was a whole different world there!!!!
