    Default 1911 Question

    I'm interested in purchasing a 1911 and have a budget of 1,000 - 2,000 dollars.
Been a while since I've had one of these but always liked how they felt and pointed.

    Looking for 45 acp.
I know most of the offerings in that range but don't know which is the better quality.

My use is not as a carry weapon. It will be in the safe and used to plink and target shoot. A nice handgun to sometime pass down to younger relatives.

Local shops carry Kimber and Dan Wesson and I do see Springfield from time to time.

Any recommendation or input would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Dan Wesson - excellent choice in that price range, as is The Springfield TRP ,also take a look Les Baer -new if you don't mind the wait for it to be built- a fantastic used Les Baer for $1500 or either way Les Baer is a custom pistol whose quality in that price range is hard to beat. If you have up to $2000.00 to spend you really have a lot of options including Kimber and S&W custom shop 1911's. In that price range personally I would be looking hard at Les Baer or Dan Wesson .There is another option in that price range Fusion Firearms , the owner ran Dan Wesson at one time. He sells complete pistols and kits to build a high end 1911 pistols. A complete pistol depending on options can run up to $2500.00. I bought a frame and slide kit with sights for $1300.00 in 357 sig and did the build myself and then refinished it in Cerakote. I will build a combat commander sized pistol in 10 mm for carry. With that said at some point I am looking to add both a Dan Wesson and a Les Baer to my collection , in the price range that you are looking at they would be my top 2 choices,Brian /EFR

I tend to be a high end guy,,,,, with that out front, I would think about the Baer, although I do not own one. Springfield has a lifetime warranty which is a major plus. I would recommend that you visit the 1911forum.com and read all you can before your purchase. Find out what plastic parts are on the weapon. Check out warranty issues with the different manufacturers.

That forum is a wealth of information.
    George,

    You have pretty sizeble budget.
My recommendation would be Springfield TRP, or DW Specialist.

I have TRP, and couldn't be happier(will I could be happier, if I had Wilson Combat or something..LOL), but for the money, its well built, accurate, dependable. And with one of the best CS in industry to boot.

I had DW CBOB, and it was one of the tightest fitting 1911 I've ever had. Use no MIM parts, and it fed the empties from magazine. Can't get much more reliable then that.
I saw a guy at the range with Stainless specialist, and basically, its same built quality, but with 5" pkg. Little more money then that of TRP tho.

Here is the good read. Look under "high end production"

Quality in that price range is subjective. Just about anything you buy that's over a grand is a quality made 1911. It basically boils down to preference and options when you start getting over $1000. Do you want a USA built gun, custom checkering, few to no MIM parts, etc. I don't know of anything cast in that price range, as well, so you're getting forged carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum built guns. If you did deep, you'll find someone who has had an issue with every one of them, so pick what you like with the options you want and test your budget.

Guns that say Colt, Ruger, S&W, Kimber, Dan Wesson, or any of the US made customs would make a good hand me down, at least they would to me if I were passed one. I wouldn't get too thrilled with anything built in Brazil or Asia, nor a Sig 1911, for that matter, but that is just me. Here are a couple 1911's that are reviewed by the owner. It's a decent guide and the prices are still close to what he has in the post. http://www.1911addicts.com/showthrea...u-1911-addicts...

This 1911 is my absolute favorite and I'm including all the custom guns. http://www.kimberamerica.com/1911/cu...super-match-ii

If it cost $1500, or more, you're likely to not go wrong, no matter who built it.

Thanks for all the responses an link to the review.

Stopping this evening I was able to look at these 1911s :

    Springfield TRP in Armory Kote.
    Ithaca
    A few Kimbers ( can't remember the models )
Dan Wesson Guardian and CCO. Liked these but want a full size. He was out of full size DW's

Of what I handled today I liked the Springfield TRP the best.
    The Ithacas were also nice.

I'll be looking at others in upcoming days.
