.22 LR Ammo Question
Okay, so I am not necessarily in the dark, but I have not really been paying attention to all the issues with 22 LR. So, can someone fill me in on:
1. Why is it so scarce?
2. Why do people want it? It's such a small round, is it just a cheap technique/aim ammo to use?
3. What is considered a decent price now? I just saw 500 rounds for like $33 locally. That decent?
4. Is it a bad time for me to buy a "plinking" gun based on all of this?

Re: .22 LR Ammo Question
Compared to other ammo, it relatively inexpensive to shoot which is a big plus if you shoot hundreds of round when you go to the range. It's fun for plinking, has very little recoil so is easy to shoot all day, and can be used for hunting small game.
Most ammo is scarce right now. I think that people stock up on .22 along with other calibers because it is so cheap to buy for stocking. It's relatively affordable to buy 5-10 thousand rounds to stock up on and take shooting. For the same price as 5000 rounds of .22, you might be able to get 6-7 hundred rounds of 9 mm. 8 hundred rounds of 9 mm can be gone in one or two trips to the range while 5000 rounds of .22 can last a few more. When it's hard to find replacement ammo as it is now, it's smart to stock up on the cheap stuff so you are prepared for a few trips to the range vs. one and done.

Re: .22 LR Ammo Question
"junk" 22 like winchester wild cats / thunderbolts sold for 179 a case of 5000, so 18.00/500. Decent CCI "target" was about 265 a case, and wolf/sk target was about 500 a case. Yes it is a bad time to buy ammo, and yes it will come down again. I bought my friend three 555 round milk cartons for 73.00 with tax (at walmart last week). So that was something like 22/500, and that is 4-5 bucks inflated. 33 bucks is pretty insulting so remember to vote next election and get rid of this unconstitutional mentality.

Re: .22 LR Ammo Question
Okay, I am clear now. I'll have to look where I buy my ammo and see what they charge. Right now, I pay roughly $14/50 for 9mm Fiocci or American Eagle, which I think is decent. So, maybe their 22 is more in line with that. The amo I saw today was CCI target. It's not where I buy my ammo normally. So, $22-$25 is the range that would be a sweet spot right now IMHO.

Re: .22 LR Ammo Question
Immediately pre-hysteria, Federal bulk pack gave 22LR at ~$0.04/round, and CCI Mini-mags for just over $0.06 per round.
Now CCI has been at $0.10/round . . . when I've seen it . . . and no Fed Bulk pack at all.

Re: .22 LR Ammo Question
When I started shooting thunderbolt was $7.99 for 500 rounds. Good stuff was like $12.99 for a brick. I won't buy anything right now unless it is within 7% or so of prepanic prices. I am betting on no new bans passing. I may be 100% wrong so do as you see fit. If you have nothing I would aquire a little now at the best price you can find for decent ammo.
Some people just plain suck.
