    Default Smith model 57?

What do you guys think of the Smith & Wesson model 57? or what is your experience with them ? Smith no longer makes the 57 in 4 inch , they only makes the 657 in 6 inch .

I have handled one at the Gunshop and it feels good and pointed well, but i would like to hear fom someone has one or shot one. I plan to start reloading soon , so ammo cost wont be a problem.

This will be my last handgun to be added to my collection before i start to spruce up my rifle collection.

I also like the Smith model 25 mountain Gun but its going for $800 plus, way too over priced imo.

    Thanks for your input.

    Nyman.

A .44 magnum is more versatile.

Yes, i like the 44 mag too, its versatile as you said and the ammo/supplies is more readily available, but the problem is the recoil.

Does Smith Makes the 44 in a 4 inch bbl.?

    Thanks, nyman

I owned a M-57 once and liked it. All I have now is a Model 58 nickel, and it is one of my favorite shooters.

Yes, Smith made the 29 and 629 in the 4 inch barrel. I
have one of each, and they are great field guns. Recoil is moderate with .44 Special loads, and can be stout with .44 Magnum 240 JHP.

A field Gun is exactly what i.m looking for, Camping, hiking , hunting companion, Fishing etc, not so much for target shooting, i,m going to look into the 29/629 too.

My Dealer has a 57 4 inch bbl. some sort of special factory grooved grip for $629 new, is that a good price for a 57?

    Thanks Nyman

Do you mean a blued 57 or a stainless 657?

FWIW I have a 8 3/8" Mod 57 that I used to use for Metal Silhouette target shooting. It is a very accurate hangun with moderate recoil. I don't think I'd want to subject it to being carried in a holster on a regular basis but that's just me.

I also have a 3" Mod 657 that is my woods carry gun. I don't have to worry too much about holster wear on the finish or rust. It sits in a high riding pancake holster on my hip whenever I'm out in the woods. It's accompanied me all over Pa. and Me. for almost 20 years now. It too is a very accurate handgun. My current carry round is Remington 210gr JSP. HTH

Yes, its a 57 with a deep rich blue, looks almost like the bluing on the Colt Royal Blue, .
I know the 57 isnt made anymore.

Interestingly i didnt know that the 57 came in 3 inch bbl.

With bluing like that are you sure you'd want it as a carry piece? Sounds more like a collector that can be taken to range and enjoyed.

My 3" 657 is one of the Lou Horton specials that S&W used to put out.

Are you dead set on Smiths? If not, the Ruger Redhawk is also available with a four inch barrel.
