Re: Bipartisan gun bill proposed by House
My support for this bill would be based on how they define a "straw purchaser."
I mean...if someone breaks into my house and takes my M4 or AK-47, should I get 20 years as a "straw purchaser" because my firearms were stolen?
Or if I've owned a particular rifle for a while and sell it to a friend in a private sale without knowing he is a prohibited person, should I get 20 years as a "straw purchaser?"
Going after straw purchasers is definitely a good thing. But we need to be sure that only actual straw purchasers get hit and not people who had firearms stolen or sold a firearm to a person they did not know was a prohibited person.

How is a crime committed in one state, affecting citizens of only that state, a federal crime? I'm all for prosecuting straw purchasers, but I'm equally against more federal power.

Re: Bipartisan gun bill proposed by House
That is precisely the problem we are having right now, isn't it? A very famous precedent was the Supreme Court ruling on Wickard v. Filburn in 1942 that said that even if you were growing wheat on your private land for your own private consumption, you were still subject to federal regulations because by growing your own wheat you had affected interstate commerce by not using it...

More recently, even though in a rare instant when a case is clearly not about commerce, somehow the Chief Justice still found a way to enable the Feds by calling it a "tax"...

Yet another item that should be handled at the state level.
I wish the feds would worry about federal shit and let our states deal with state shit!Jimmy cracked corn and HE didn't care! Why should I?

Re: Bipartisan gun bill proposed by House
We don't need federal legislation covering straw purchases. We need stronger penalties at the state level. TRUST ME, we don't need or want federal intervention into this.

Re: Bipartisan gun bill proposed by House
I'm not entirely sure how all of this works, but my biggest worry with this type of bill would be something buried in it or added to it that restrict other things. Basically, passing an awb or mag ban by deception.
