    Default Recommendations for media separator

By this age in life, I should know that you get what you pay for, or more accurately, you don't get what you don't pay for. Along with the Cabela's brass tumbler that I got, which I'm happy with, I also got a $30 media separator. It's total junk. Can anyone recommend one that seems to be the right balance between quality and affordability? Or perhaps some other solution for separating the brass and the media, which is not an exercise in frustration?

This is the item in question:

"Holds more than 2,000 9mm cases." That's hysterical, considering the thing is about as sturdy as a pipe cleaner.

Several years ago I got the Big Blue from Mid Way. It's nothing more than a glorified collinder that fits over a 3 or 5 gallon bucket. You have to shake it or stir the brass but it's always worked well, especially with walnut media and was only $5.00

I've got this one and it works very well as long as you don't turn it too fast.

You could always just get a kids beach sifter and shake you booty. (get it?)

I use 2 plastic containers about quart size. Glad ware I think. I glued the 2 lids together. Then cut the center out of the one lid, pretty much just leaving the rim that holds on to the container. The other lid I drilled lots of holes in smaller than my smallest caliber brass. Has kind of like an hour glass function to use it.

Pour the brass and media in one container then put the lids and the other container on and flip. Give it a little shake and the media moves to the bottom and the brass stays up top. It costs about $1 to make.

I use the 9mm tray from my shell sorter I just pop in on top of a clean 5 gallon bucket for the media to fall into. Most of the media falls through quickly. Shaking the tray, and running my hand through the brass quickly gets the rest.

It also works good for the job it was designed for, sorting brass. If you often have range pickups with mixed calibers, this will save you a ton of time.

collinder from the dollar store. I would rather spend my money on something else when a collinder would work.
