Default They made easy work of this safe...like BUTTER

...the more I read about this stuff the happier I am to have a theft resistant safe with firearm specific insurance.

My safe is a joke compared to this one, I admittedly went the cheap route but it looks pretty. Just hoping my alarm and cameras will be enough to make them leave once they get in.

I am more a proponent of layered security but it is abundantly clear by these pictures that a safe alone is a risk.

Here's a link to the back story, funny....some thought it was one of those "I lost my guns in a boating accident" until the OP edited his post with pictures.

And this is how they got into this guys garage

    Guys!

    Remember,

    1. No tools (especially power tools near your safe)

    2. Avoid (if at all possible) putting your safe in your garage

    3. Effectively mount your safe (sides and floor). Box it in, like in a closet.

    4. Layered security (dog, alarm, etc.)

    Am I missing anything?

No windows in your garage door will prevent access via that method. Or them busting the glass for access.

You can add a garage door lock to make it harder. I use one when everyone is home for the night and for when away on vacation. (not mine pictured, I don't have windows in my door).

This is why I have the trolley release wired shut on my GDO. I can get at it from inside with wire cutters but it would be night unto impossible to pull that latch.

Agree with reinforcing your garage doors though most can and will buckle. I could probably fall through the first door (the wooden one).

What do you think of that safe? By far, not the best one but they made small work of it.....that's for sure.

I worked for a vault and safe company and used to build TL-15's and TL-30's as well as bank vaults and vault doors. Nothing you can buy at Dunhams will take more than 5 minutes (if that) to get into for a person that knows their way around safes.

A battery powered sawzall to the corner of the safe allows you to peel the top back like a sardine can.

Simply bolting a safe to the floor in the corner of the room would make it a lot harder to get in using a sawzall. The thieves would need to cut one of the walls away to get enough room. Sure, they could still get in, but the question would be how long they would want to be there. Also, framing in the area above the safe would add time, especially if you use additional hardened screws or even hardened bolts in the areas where they would need to cut.
You can never have enough horsepower or ammunition.

If you had the space to frame it in and surround it with drywall to make it look neat, would adding something like chicken wire (loosely) behind the drywall help to defeat a sawzall by binding up the blade?

These were professionals. Not going to convict the owner without knowing him but it appears either he or one of his friends/girlfriends let someone know about his collection as well as his schedule. Looks like all the tools they needed were already in his garage!

In this case, I'm not sure anything would have stopped these crooks.

Yes, very true all good points in this thread.

The name of the game is TIME. Getting into any safe is not impossible, we were even called out to get past vault doors, like this.

You, well I, can get in but it will take long enough that the alarm should have someone respond LONG before I get in.

I think next year I'll be building a vault and do a how to. I have all the drawings and since I'm not in the industry anymore I want to share with the guys here what I know.
