Steve Haines said a gun show in Benton next month will proceed and will include the sale of AK-47s and AR-15s guns.

He said he has received inquiries from people questioning if the event will be canceled in light of the recent postponement of the largest outdoors show in the state.

Organizers of the Eastern Sports and Outdoors Show in Harrisburg indefinitely postponed the nine-day show, which was scheduled to open Feb. 2, after a backlash over its decision to forbid the sale and display of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

“I am positive this event will be run,” said Haines, a representative of the Benton Volunteer Fire Co., which has held the gun show for at least 11 years as a key fundraiser.

A gun show in an Allentown area hotel last weekend drew a record crowd, with some complaining of supply-driven price increases, according to media reports.

Haines said the supplier at the Benton gun show has an adequate stock of AK-47 and AR-15 rifles and magazine-fed semi-automatic rifles because he received shipments on back order.

The Benton show typically attracts 2,000 people, he said.

Eighty gun dealers are booked to attend the show to buy, sell or trade guns, knives and ammunition, he said.

One display will feature Civil War items and gun parts, and vendors also will sell custom leather goods, embroidery, archery equipment and food, he said.

The event runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 9 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at the fire hall at 150 Colley St., Benton.
