moving to New Jersey
I know, I know, but I work and have family in New York City. In any event I may be moving to NJ in the next several months. Can anyone point me in the right direction to research what I must do relative to (a) my LTCF; and (b) my two handguns (I do not own any long guns). Are there registration requirements in New Jersey, etc? I am aware of the transportation requirements and do not need info on that aspect. Thanks.

Re: moving to New Jersey
If I were you I would sooner pay for them all to move to PA before moving to NJ yourself. I used to live there so I know what I'm talking about.

Re: moving to New Jersey
This is an email from Nappen, well-known NJ Firearms Lawyer:
If you are establishing a residency in New Jersey,
then you may bring your firearm(s) with you to your New Jersey home.
However, you must follow N.J.S.A. 2C:39-6g provisions,
ie, cased, unloaded, inaccessible.
I also advise not to bring any weapon that is banned
under New Jersey law, ie, "assault rifles," etc.
Please check out the New Jersey State Police website for
more information regarding this and other such related firearm issues.
You will need to obtain a NJ FID if you plan on purchasing any
firearm in NJ.
You should, perhaps, attempt to obtain a copy of
Evan's book: NAPPEN II: NEW JERSEY GUN, KNIFE AND WEAPON LAW,
which relays New Jersey law and its common pitfalls.
This book is presently out of print.
However, copies may be available at some online sites
and at a couple libraries in New Jersey.
Hope the above information was useful.
Sincerely,
Louis P. Nappen, Esq.

Re: moving to New Jersey
I also have an email from the state police but I was betrayed by gmail and can't find it right now. The jist of it was that you can bring firearms legally purchased in other states, eg FL in my case. An FID which is a prerequisite when applying for a purchase permit in NJ, is not needed (basically NJ, if you have a firearm you have an FID). You may "voluntarily" register your firearm with the state police, but it is not required by law. Obviously, all NJ laws apply your firm arm must comply with assualt weapons ban details. This was all from a high ranking officer at the state police (according to email signature). However, I recommend emailing them yourself because they were pretty good about getting back to me.
As a word of advice from a North Jersey native, you should apply for an FID thru your municipality once you become a resident. It is supposedly not required by law but it is known that you will run into trouble trying to explain to a LEO that you have a firearm in the car/house and do not have an FID. The sooner you apply the better because the police sit on applications forever (depending on the town)."What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms." ~ Thomas Jefferson, 1787.

I think I'd rather have razor blades in my eyeballs than move to NJ.

Re: moving to New Jersey
Dude, your taxes, car insurance, and fees will go through the roof. Make sure you fully look into these matters before committing to abandoning your freedoms. For example, a good friend of mine has a small, two bedroom house in NJ, and he pays $325 a month in property taxes. I think it will literally be cheaper to move the family to PA.
You will also never be able to make a left turn while driving, ever again. That alone is inexcusable.==============
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, — go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!”
~Samuel Adams
"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it."
