    Default NY & Federal Law on Interstate Transportation of Firearms

    I wonder how this will work out for those passing through NYS with 30 round AR15 clips in their trunk? Or 10+ round Glock mags.

    The current FOPA Transport law (18 USC 926A) only mentions the exception for 'firearms'. Whether that extends to accessories (eg: magazines) or ammunition remains undefined and is left to yet unestablished judicial interpretations. Until then this is a gray area that should not be considered risk-free.

    In 2011 I researched FOPA to include exactly your question.

    In particular I obtained an interpretation by a legislative attorney of the Congressional Research Service (see page 5 of her report here).
