Even though I selected 'other' for the interest of the 260 Remington and the 7mm WSM (toss up), I guess I should also mention the 243 Winchester. I make the ammunition for the USDA and they have shot over 250 deer with it in the past 2 months.

I'm a fan of the -06 family. The .30-06 will always be my favorite. I gave the .270 a try this year and had acceptable performance.

Here's a video of the second rifle doe I took this past season (skip to 3:45 for the action):

I used my .280 in 2011. It was just as effective as the .30-06 and .270. Next year the 35 Whelen is up to bat. That should hammer them as well. Anything that shoots a reasonably sized bullet at a high enough velocity for the given range is going to do the trick. The .270 and .280 extend the MPBR a little which makes some of the longer shots a tad easier.

458 Win.mag loaded with 300Gr hollow points, because when you say "one shot one kill" you gota really mean it.

I grab my 30-06, loaded with 150 grain Hornady SSTs, as general rule but enjoy the option of my 30-30 as well if I'm feeling frisky and don't want to use a scope.

I have to say I love my Remington 760 and will never part ways with it. My Marlin 30-30 is a good rifle but at my new place I have the possibilty of shooting a lot longer than it can handle.

    For me, it depends...

In the fields, with a scope, it's .280 Remington. Like a .30-06, but with a higher BC and more energy/velocity at 200+ yds. That, and the greater range of bullet weights, compared to .270, is nice, too.

In the woods, with open sights, I'm perfectly happy with a good ol' .30-30 Lever gun.

6.5x55 Swedish, 7x57 Mauser, and .44 Magnum (I've taken the most deer with this)
