Have PA LTCF. What about Ohio?
I have my PA LTCF but I travel to Ohio pretty frequently. Do I need to get an Ohio license too, or will my PA one allow me to have a loaded gun in my car?

Re: Have PA LTCF. What about Ohio?
FireintheWhole, welcome to the site...under law is a link that explains PA reciprocity with other states : http://www.pafoa.org/law/carrying-fi...ry/reciprocity
As you can see, Ohio is not currently not on the list, but I heard a gorilla whispering it may be in the winds...for now, the only way is if you are traveling through to another state that has a reciprocity agreement with pa, in which case you could have it with you (UNLOADED and separated from ammunition per federal peaceable journey laws). Stay safe!

I don't believe you can get a non-resident license from Ohio. You would have to look into Florida or Utah non-resident licenses.

Re: Have PA LTCF. What about Ohio?
I have family in OH, and have had several discussions regarding the CCW laws in the state. The compromises that were made to get the law passed were ridiculous, and make a CWP all but worthless in the state. I am not a lawyer, and the information I have gained is from a well-informed OH citizen. You will want to confirm this information, and if you get clarification, I would be interested in hearing about it.
Dumb requirements—even with a CWP—in Ohio.
1) If you are in your vehicle, the weapon MUST be visible, so an approaching LEO can see that you are armed.
2) When you exit the vehicle, the weapon MUST be concealed.
3) Unlike PA, if a store, or other establishment, has a posted NO WEAPON sign on the door, you are breaking the law by simply entering the establishment with a weapon. During my recent visits to my parents’ home, there was not a store or business that did NOT have a NO WEAPONS sign posted. Guess I have to leave the gun in the car!
By contrast, I was told by the Sheriff’s representative when I got my PA LTCF that if a store has a no weapons sign posted, “we ask that you respect that”. I have never seen such a sign in PA.
If you are interested in getting a FL non-resident permit, or learning more about it, a link is attached.

Looking forward to hearing more about the Ohio laws!

Re: Have PA LTCF. What about Ohio?
x2 to checking out Utah or Florida permits. I personally went the Utah route because the Fire Institute out here in Pittsburgh offered the prerequisite course regularly.
@Nastrand69: The "plain sight" requirement for traveling in a motor vehicle, according to the Ohio Atty General's website, has been removed. The firearm must, however, be secured in a holster on the licensee's person.
This website is very helpful: http://www.ag.state.oh.us/le/prevent...arry/index.asp
See especially this concealed carry handbook for Ohio (in PDF form): http://www.ag.state.oh.us/le/prevent...t_20080327.pdf
Apparently, some new rules went into effect 27 March 08. I don't know the extent of the changes and am generally not familiar with Ohio law, so check the law, check that website, consult an attorney licensed in Ohio, etc.
It does sound like a car safe is a good idea if you visit Ohio regularly.
EDIT: Also note that if you are pulled over by the OHP, you are required to disclose the fact that you are a concealed carry permit holder, that you are currently armed, and request instructions from the OHP trooper according to that handbook.Last edited by Johannes_Paulsen; April 2nd, 2008 at 01:04 PM.
