Thanks for the responses. Still not answered....difference between plated lead and unplated lead acting upon a steel target. Plated lead as in Berry's plated bullets. Bullets meant not to exceed 1200 fps have copper plating measuring in the thousandths.

If you're using appropriate targets your choice of bullet, either lead or copper plater lead will has very little difference on the target and the 17 yards you stated is a perfectly safe range as proven daily around the world at ranges and matches.

From my actual shooting experience in my home range. I have shot this particular target and hanging system with every kind of off the shelf style of ammo with the exception of monolithic bullets from as close as 5 yards in and have been hit with jackets only once. That jacket happened to come from a 22lr shot from my sons rifle from 20 yards away. I shoot all manner of handgun calibers from 2” mouse guns to PCC’s from 7 yards out with no trouble. The 5 yard shooting is with my .380 picket gun and my Glock43x EDC using either HP or basic FMJ ammo.


I’ve shot several steel challenge matches Over the years and just took an intro to the shooting sports class a few weeks back. A few of the stages were steel plates and some of the guys standing well behind the shooters took jacket fragments to the face. This is because they use cheap or mild steel at most ranges and They are not forward angled toward the ground. The jackets were flying back well over 30 yards. If your going to invest buy quality over quantity and hang them right.

Here’s one of my main targets. I’ve hit it with 5.56 and 7.62x39 from as close and 20 yards with zero damage or fragment deflection towards myself.

I’m not saying do what I do, I’m just pointing out what is possible from my own experience.
