    1) you shouldn't shoot steel that close
    2) frangible ammo might be a better choice than lead or FMJ.

i've been hit with lead splatter,(it wasn't mine) this is accurate. (maybe not always)
even when a target is angled, you may still catch some flak.
i see the main benefit to shooting steel as hitting the target at range and not having to scope the target, bring an expensive camera system or having to hike downrange to check the pattern.
throw up the steel and if you "ping" or see it swinging you clearly hit your 3" - 8" target at desired distance. so if it is close enough to see your holes, no reason to shoot steel.

as for a deal, i bought mine a few years ago from here.

You fellas ought to have a talk with IPSC and USPSA...

23' is the minimum for steel at USPSA.
The question asked was about handguns and handgun caliber rifles, either would be safe at 17 yards.

As for no need to shoot steel, not everyone wants to shoot holes in paper for groups...

    This place never changes.

Thanks for the responses. Still not answered....difference between plated lead and unplated lead acting upon a steel target. Plated lead as in Berry's plated bullets. Bullets meant not to exceed 1200 fps have copper plating measuring in the thousandths.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.
