I bought my first AK right before Obama was elected. The about only AK mags I can recall seeing for that price were surplus, beat-to-death mags that were rusty and needed to have dents hammered out of them for the follower to move.

Well, Tapco mags can be had cheap, but I'm talking steel mags.

Even before Sandy H00k, they were around $10-$13.

Yugo BHO mags have always commanded a premium over standard mags and while these are Croatian "copies", I still think the BHO makes them just a tad more "desirable" - to those who like that.
These currently sell for $12-$13 most places new.

Just ordered 5 of the Croation AK mags and 3 D&H mags for the AR. Shipping was still 8.50.
