The ar500 chest plates have been going up in price every day since i ordered mine. I paid $124 for both plates. Its now up to about $200 for the pair.

Nitride is the same as the old Tennifer Glock finish, its a heat treating surface process.
No idea on your Colt, if it's gray color it's probably just phosphate/parkerized, which is fine, just harder to clean.
He's probably not replacing anything, but building something new.
There's no real need to replace your perfectly good BCG.
