Recommendations for a cheek rest?
I've been researching certain things to better improve my shooting at the range. While I spent time in the military and regularly carried around an M4 I was no marksman even though I did manage to shoot expert in tech school. I failed qualifications once too. :/
Still, shooting like 200 rounds every 6 months wasn't much practice anyways.
I just recently bought my first rifle a Ruger 10/22. I'm glad because the ammo is super cheap and it was very simply to pick up and start fiddling with. I took it apart just to get familiar with it first and everything. Since I've never set up a scope before I just threw it on and the first time I fired it it shot super low. I took it off and put it back on again and the next time I shot I was doing pretty well for someone who hasn't touched a rifle in 2 years. By the end of the day I was shooting a 2 inch group for the most part but it was a little off center target and it was only out to about 25 yards.
One thing I noticed is I could get my face on the buttstock with a scope on but I managed anyways. After some research though since while I do like having fun I'd like to be a little more competent at this so one thing I noticed was the recommendation of a cheek rest or pad that allows your face to comfortably be seated so you can easily look down your scope just like if you were aiming down the stock ironsights. I looked around and it looks like especially since I am a left handed shooter it would be in my best interest to make my own cheek rest and possibly make it out of foam or wood. My only problem is I don't really have the tools for this. I'll see what my father has since I'm going to his place to install a sling to the rifle.
Anyone else have some recommendations on how I should go about this? My face sits real low compared to the scope. At least an inch underneath the end of the stock. I'm not really interested in dumping hundreds of dollars to make this work since while I do want to be accurate this rifle is mainly just to get me familar with basic marksmanship for when I eventually move up to a higher caliber and potentially pursue hunting.

Karsten's probably is the most well known for cheek rests.

I personally have this one for my 22 mag. It works pretty good.

You might also want to replace your factory 10/22 stock as well.

Re: Recommendations for a cheek rest?
It's not going to win you any beauty contests & it's not nearly as versatile as a commercial cheek rest, but a piece of pipe insulation or whittled down wood does wonders. I've seen people secure wood cheek rests with nails & tapped stocks. I secured my pipe insulation with tape & put a stock pack on top.
Good luck.Need Gun. Need Now.
