Looks like the guy is racking the charging handle on the right side as apose to the rear charging handle of an ar. As much as I'd like a juicy conspiracy, I'm gonna have to go with it was the saiga.

How can we verify this?

According to the comments there are several things in the video that are suspect.
1. Why would the rifle have been removed at night? Implies that this video segment has nothing to do with Sandy Creek.
2. Is that the correct ME talking about the correct case?

Re: NO RIFLE WAS USED AT SANDY....
I find it interesting but not conclusive to the facts at hand; but in the video where the police and one possibly white lab coated tech clear the weapon from the back of the car, someone near the camera (in a helicopter or at the news desk) says very faintly, "Looks like an assault rifle, doesn't it."
The rifle might not have been found until after dark though I doubt it would take them that long to ID the suspects car and search it. Or did they still need a warrant to do so? Was there not enough exigent circumstance? IANAL so I honestly don't know.
As to the ME: Is it possible the 'rifle' was chambered in same caliber as one or more of the pistols, such as 9mm? In this case, the ME could only assume a long rifle if the damage seemed greater as a longer barrel would build up more energy/velocity than a shorter one. But that would be less than scientific. A match would need to be made by an errant round or one that was not too deformed to a test firing. The only real way the ME could say definitively that it was the rifle, is if the calibers differed from the pistols altogether.
