    A symptom of the depression was that businesses were actually selling for less than book value. In 1932, Ben Graham wrote the article, "Is American Business Worth More Dead Than Alive?" pointing this out. At that time you could buy many companies for less than the cash they had on hand, and then pay yourself back with profit by shutting down.
