Default 40% of guns sales go without a background check. Really?

With the Oregon shooting in the headlines, gun control is in the news again. The number getting thrown around is what I said in the title of this post. It generally goes unchallenged. How could it be true?

Sounds like a fairly reasonable number, although I don't know its origin. How could it not be true?
While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

And how do you defend it?

Last I heard from our nightly Pravda, the shooter used a stolen rifle from an acquaintance.

I know that facts and logic mean nothing to gun controllers, but it was not a "sale"...

There really is no way to get a definite number on something like that. Private long gun transfers in PA and most other states do not require a transfer if both residents are in state. That's a lot of sales.

Obviously no way to verify the number, so anything is a guess.

Private HANDGUN sales in most states don't require a background check. Sites like vaguntrader.com have a lot of for sale ads posted each day, and obviously there's sales between friends, coworkers, relatives, etc.

Hard to prove, even harder to disprove. Like "unreported rapes" or "undiscovered crimes" or "total number of homeless people"*.

    * For some time, the media dutifully reported that there were 3 million homeless Americans. Turns out, there was no factual basis to this at all, the number was pulled out of the ass of a Lefty advocate, Mitch Snyder. Lately, they've massaged the bullshit and now claim that "up to 3.5 million Americans will experience homelessness at some point in a year."

The same media also accepted as fact that between 1 million and 5 million homeless people die every year in America, which runs from unlikely (total American deaths of all types are around 2.4-2.5 million) to impossible.

    Never trust the Progressive media.

After arguing with anti-gunners that we are for only the law abiding citizens to own guns and that everyone must pass a background check, we get this. Not good.

Unfortunately, I've checked my Handbook of Progressive Truths, and home-owning gun owners have a 110% chance of being killed with their own guns several times per year.
