Re: Wait time for police check card in Lower Merion?
On that, I agree with Hired Goon.
As many here know, I have no problem with the Sheriff checking with the applicant's local police to see if there are any undocumented issues. Montco is too big for the Sheriff to know everyone.
I do not even have a problem with dropping off the letter at the local Police Dept and picking it up a few days later. After all, the sheriff is going to check with them, may as well speed up the process.
I DO have a problem with the local Police Dept charging a citizen a fee to tell another law enforcement officer that the applicant is or is not an upstanding citizen.
So what if Officer Bob from Lower Merion bumps into Officer Rick from Radnor in a donut shop on Township Line Rd, and Citizen Charlie walks in open carrying. Rick says to Bob; "Hey, look at that. Do you know him?"
Rick says "Maybe I do and maybe I don't. Gimme $25 and I will tell you".

Re: Wait time for police check card in Lower Merion?
This is outrageous. By state law the fee to apply for a LTCF is $20. Period. You're paying more than double the fee required by law (total of $20 + $25) because the sheriff is breaking the law, and Lower Merion PD is not only going along with it but charging you for the privilege.
The OP's experience is exactly why you should have a problem with it. Any deviation from the state-mandated procedure is the camel's nose under the tent leading to the kind of ridiculous overcharging described above. There's a good reason that state law says the application is to be uniform across the state.Last edited by twency; December 14th, 2012 at 03:17 PM.
I am not a lawyer. Nothing I say or write is legal advice.

Re: Wait time for police check card in Lower Merion?
The sheriff would get around it by saying that they are charging only $20 for the license.
What/if the PD charges for a "background check" is out of their hands

Re: Wait time for police check card in Lower Merion?
It's not a requirement so, if they ask and you comply, it's nothing more than just a request. The police can't forcefully just rip off your underwear and shove a Surefire up your turd cutter; but if you voluntarily consent to a cavity search, there aren't any civil rights violations.
