"In the Gravest Extreme" by Massad Ayoob. A must read for anyone that is thinking about carrying a handgun in my opinion.

Re: Good books or DVD's for noobie?
I own a lot of gun books, from mindset to tactics and everything in between. Of all my books, I'd have to say that one of the best books I own is 'Some Of The Answer, Handgun' by Jim Crews. It's more of a manual than a book, because it's printed on 8 1/2" by 11" paper, but it has a coil binding holding all 263 pages together. The manual is basically a 'How to' when it comes to handling handguns and covers everything from the beginner basics to more advanced skills like performing one handed speed reloads. It not only tells you how to perform the functions, but literally shows you in pictures as well - there are over 760 photos in the manual alone. I bought the manual after taking a training class last fall and pretty much everything I learned in the class is shown in the manual, so it makes for a great reference in case you want to brush up on your skills or can't remember the correct way to do something.
The book is no longer in production, but Personal Defense Training (PDT) in Norcross, Georgia bought the rights to the books and have them available for $34.95 shipped. PDT also has the 'Some Of The Answer, Urban Carbine' and 'Some Of The Answer, Urban Shotgun' by Jim Crews available too. For what it's worth, I had a great experience ordering the book from PDT and had the book in my hand in less than 5 days from the day I placed my order.I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand. -- Susan B. The NRA is an excellent source for information. Also, Guntalk.tv has a good selection of free short videos online about firearms. Great for newbies!

Ditto what colagrrl said. I have ALL of Jim Crews books (He personally signed mine as well) and they're MORE than worth adding to your collection. I was lucky enough to take his 2 day pistol course, and thought it was worth the $300 spent within the first half hour. There are a LOT of instructional books and vids out there, and its rough to decide/find the good ones. Some really good suggestions have been made in this thread though. Look for the world class trainers that happen to be published as well. You usually wont go wrong.
Tiger Mcgees(?sp) Book of Two Guns is also recommended."A large caliber is good to have, but its SHOT PLACEMENT that counts!!"

While I think this a great book "In the Gravest Extreme" I don't always agree with him on whats need to get a LTCF. Before I get flamed I know you can only clarify so much in a book.
