    Smile German restaurants

Does anyone knowand or frequent restaurants with good German food? This can include Pennsylvania German food as well ( some people refer to it as Pennsyllvania Dutch , but it is really [Deutsch] German).

If so what is your favorite meal and drink? and how good is is it ? 1 to 10 . ten being highest.

    Thanks Ed

if you're ever in pittsburgh, try max's allegheny tavern on the northside...

    www.maxsalleghenytavern.com

i've only eaten there twice. i forget what i had. it was good...for german food. i am half german, and i grew up in a german-american town eating german food, so i feel qualified to say...

german food is very, very bland--you'd think at some point in their long and illustrious history of pillaging and plundering, the germanic people would have pillaged and plundered a spice rack, but apparently not

seriously, though, according to my german relatives who actually like german food, max's serves excellent german food.

Max's is outstanding,if you like the brewery atmosphere then try the Penn brewery restaurant, loud and has great German bands on occasion.

Was is the key word and it was called Schnitzels Tavern. It was located in the basement of the bush house which incidentally was it's 3rd location in Bellefonte over the course of 10+ years because they kept growing. It's a shame that we will never be able to eat there again. R.I.P. Schnitzels Tavern.

While keeping on the thread there is a place in State College called Herwigs Austrian Bistro This is their second location in town, they serve a rotating menu which is prepared fresh each morning and when they run out of something you are SOL so get there early. Some of my favs are as follows.

    Rosmarin Schweinsbraten

    Bauernschmaus

    And of course

    Jägerschnitzel

While I recognize traditionally german food can lack a certain "flair" in the spice world I think Brandy (owner/cook for Herwigs) has really added a punch to the food that takes it to a different level. But really, who are we kidding, if you want real german food... hop on a plane and head on over the pond!

    Cheers,
    Josh

Where in State College?! I feel the need to drive a couple of hrs for German. There was a good one in DC, but I have yet to find one up here.
