Stake your nuts!
I stopped by the local black rifle specialty shop (Lanco tactical in E-town -nice place!) today for some para-cord, and asked a question (advice) while I was there. Specifically, I asked if they stake their castle nuts - the response was vociferous and immediate - Everybody in the whole store seemed to join in - customers and shopkeepers alike!
The bottom line that I took away was "if you'd stake your life on it, STAKE YOUR NUTS!" (they also made it clear, that it was base plate that gets staked, not the nut) .
If you are not decided what exactly you are doing with the gun (or which base plate you want) don't stake it yet just torque it down, but when you've decided it's right and are going to bet your life on it then STAKE it!
Either way it was a fun 10 minutes!

Re: Stake your nuts!
A properly staked castle nut will not come loose and can be removed with a stock wrench with ease. No reason not to stake it, other than cost savings, yet so many companies that people perceive to be reputable skip over this step.

It could just be negligence, either way they don't do it and it is brain dead simple.

Re: Stake your nuts!
Just seems like common sense... if you don't want to stake it, at least use loc-tite. You don't want to drop a mag /and/ tighten a bolt when it really counts, do you?
If possible for your particular setup, drilling the fastener and installing a pin to the bolt (Sig 5 series have them on the front sights for adjustment purposes) also works. Not possible on every fastener, though.Last edited by Christ; October 9th, 2012 at 02:28 PM.

Re: Stake your nuts!
Who sells bolt carriers with unstaked castle nuts? Just curious, I've never seen one first hand.
