Angry Almost mugged near the sheriffs office!

Last night I was the designated driver for my friends. I dropped them off near the Scranton hardware bar, I parked across the street from Scranton counseling. As I was going back to my car, by myself, I noticed that this rather large man noticed me. He started walking down the street and I saw that he was looking around to see if there were witnesses, there weren't any. I realized if you apply the rational choice theory of criminology there was a motivated offender the man making a b line towards me, suitable target me a young male alot smaller than him by myself, and lack of capable guardians witnesses and LEOs. So at this point I realize shtf is about to happen, I pretented like I didnt notice him. But he was about 10-15 feet away when he put his hand in his pocket, as soon as I saw him go for his pocket I drew my NAA PUG from my front coat pocket. He was completely stunned, I looked right at him and said "Are we going to have a fucking problem tonight" he slowly pulled his hand out of his pocket said something to the effect "yo dawg ma bad" and continued on his merry way.
After that I went home strapped my Glock 19 on my hip with a 19 round mag in it and a 33 rounder in my belt loops as a spare,I wasn't F-ing around when I went to pick them up at 2am.
    So how was your Saturday?

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in this discussion, this was a hypothetical that I posed after a classroom discussion. Thank you all again this really helped me gain some perspective on self defense scenarios

Yikes. What the hell is going on up there in those mountains?

I bet he will be at it again if he hasn't already.

Well... there is a housing project around where the OP parked his car. Maybe that might have something to do with why the guy was walking around that late at night in the cold with nothing to do but to act menacing.

He's seen The Office, so I'm sure he's right.

You don't mention if he was approaching toward you or passing. And it's tough to tell the details from a description over the Internet. But if you really felt in immediate threat of death or crippling injury, and a reasonable person in that exact circumstance would feel that way too, then good that you stopped the threat.

My own protocols might be different, and a scary big man walking down the street with his hands in his pockets looking around by itself would not cause me to clear leather. I need some more to go on. Either a clear verbal threat, the presentation of a weapon, or an actual assault. Before that, scary looking people would cause me to change direction and go the other way first.

Mas Ayoob's words always ring clear in my head; 'every time your gun leaves its holster you are on thin ice'.

Like I said, I wasn't there, so it's all 'academic' as they say, from my point of view. Glad nothing bad happened.

IANAL, but isn't there 3 tests for the outdoor stand your ground portion of Castle? I bolded them.

    1. Yes this was met.
    2. Yes this was met.
    3. No this was NOT met. For scary guy to be a BG, he had to have made it clear in some way that he had a firearm or a replica of a firearm, or any other weapon capable of lethal use, which is a grey area (hands could be considered a lethal weapon, as a nuke detonator, a shiv, or a can of AquaNet in one hand with a Bic lighter in the other, but that's in the eyes of a DA vs. a jury vs. a judge vs. YOU).

What you point out here is part of the reason why I said what I said in my last post about my own 'protocol' just seeing a big scary man put his hand in his pocket is not going to on its own cause me to draw. My first resort is to make haste in the opposite direction when all I see is big scary person.
