Re: AK or AR?
No, it'll be handled just like Iraq. We'll play it off like we have put all the right people in the right places and that they're ready to stand on their own. It'll look like a withdrawn, not a win or lose.
The downfall of policy happened as soon as we handed over battlespace from SOF to conventional. It went real bad when we went from conventional battlespace to ISAF/Coalition. We gave allot of territory over to countries who do not share the same views. It should have been a smash and ditch mission. Go in, kill all of the bad guys, and leave. Oh well. Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda but we didn't. Now we're dumping all sorts of money into it in a feeble attempt to make it the way it was in the 50s and 60s.

Re: AK or AR?
I honestly don't know how to honestly critique the US performance in A-stan for the simple reason that no military force has ever had lasting success there.
Not Alexander the Great, not the Mongol Hordes, not the British, not the Russians, and certainly not us.
I think it's just a grave yard for foreign armies. I remember watching all the shows right after 911 on the various news channels about A-stan's military history and thinking to myself, "Yeah, this is gonna be interesting."

Re: AK or AR?
Ironic that one of the main proponents in the '80s war in A-stan was OBL. The rebels fought because Islamic belief was being replaced by socialistic values. The govt. practically begged the USSR to help throw off the rebels, and the Soviets finally gave. It has been noted that this war was the Soviet's Nam.
A big problem is most of the insurgents fled to Pakistan, which aided them during the Soviet intervention.
That part of the world has never known peace, never will know peace. Same problem in parts of Africa. If oil were never found there, the rest of the world might not give it a notice, except for the bleeding hearts in America.

Re: AK or AR?
We could win in Afghanistan. We are handling it the right way as far as targeting goes. We're leaps and bounds over the KGB and Spetsnaz in that aspect. The problem is we're treating hard people way to soft. This game of catch and release is no good.
Personally, I love the country. It's beautiful and rich in culture and history. It's one of the last frontiers. I loved seeing the old buildings of the Soviets, the old wreckage they left behind, and the scenery is breath taking. Other than the assholes living in the hills and all the UXO, I loved it and it's history. I'd love to go back to snowboard under the right conditions.
UBL(yes, the .mil acronym was UBL but yet we'd also spell it with an O on storyboards) was only in 1 firefight against the Soviets. It took place in the caves of Khowst(my favorite province) and it lasted about 14 days. Other than that, he wasn't very Kinetic.
We had it pretty well kicked in 2002. We could have left and left with a decisive victory but we did the whole bleeding heart thing and tied that with the start of OIF, priorities kind of changed. Also, media bias doesn't help. I remember getting emails of events that happened near by or at my location that were snowballed so bad back in the states, my friends and family seemed to come off as thinking that I was going through something similar to that of the The Battle of Khe Sanh. Tie this all with our state that separates its scholars from its warriors and you have what we have today.

Re: AK or AR?
Occupants never win. Sooner or later they will be kicked out or will leave them selfs.
The only way to success while occupipaing others is total extermination of native population and applying new roots.... Something that was done to the real natives of both Americas.
