Measuring shooting distance?
Here's one I have not seen, although all that means is I have not seen it. How does one measure shooting distance? Is it measured as the distance your feet are from the target, or the gun itself?
I realize that at longer distances, the difference will most likely be insignificant. But I was reading in another place about a 3x5 card drill, where the shooter is to start off at 3 yards. Well 3 yards at toe distance is about 2 yards at gun distance for me! Maybe I have been eating too many of PA Patriot's bananas.

Re: Measuring shooting distance?
I use where my feet are generally planted. So, when I'm shooting at 25yds, my gun may be at 24yds (+/-).

Re: Measuring shooting distance?
lol. I've never heard of someone shooting a rifle at 3 yards. I suppose if you knew the ballistics of your rifle, you could zero at that distance and know where the bullet should be impacting from your poa. I would say that the distance should be measure from the tip of the muzzle, because that's the distance that the bullet travels and when the bullet starts falling. That's just my .02, but that's what I'd guess.

Re: Measuring shooting distance?
What is gross? Monkeys eat bananas, right? I have long arms like a monkey is my point...
Thanks Steve. This is how I have been measuring it. I will have to give this drill a try. The object is to start at 3 yards and have all six holes in the paper touching. Then move out to 7 yds, 10 yds, etc, and get all rounds on the paper to make the grade at that distance.
This is a pistol drill, not a rifle drill.

Re: Measuring shooting distance?
The distance is from the line that your feet touch to the target. There are police competitions that you start at 3 yds, draw your gun and shoot 6 rounds at a B27 target in, IIRC, 7 secs. At this distance it seems that you can touch the target with the muzzle. At this distance you don't even use your sights.
But to answer your question, it is the line where your put you feet (or hands, like when shooting from a barricade).Ron USAF Ret E-8 FFL01/SOT3 NRA Benefactor Member

Tape measure . . .
Actually I do use one for the outdoors, spray at 5, 10 and 15 yards with a small can of paint on top the gravel.
I've used a golf range finder for longer distances on the rifle side while hunting before, they give a good guestimate and are fairly cheap and smallHonesta Mors Turpi Vita Potior ~ 3%
