    Default WHOA !!!!!!

Beautiful day today, done work early. Hmmm. Gone shooting.
Went to the club, set up the chrony.I got it half figured out anyway. So I start shooting my baretta 9mm and it goes great. The numbers are what I figured they would be.
Now it's time for my ruger .357 stainless 6 inch. Bang, bang, bang,bang,bang,pop......... I opened the crane and inspected the wheel. All looks fine, but one look in the barrel and I find the back of a 158gr SWC. It could have blown up in my face.
It was from an early box I had loaded, when I first started reloading. Since then I have read in a thread go slow.Good advice I started heeding. Like i said this was an early box and Igot lucky it didn't Kaboom.I forgot to put a powder charge in the case. The primer was enough to push the bullet into the barrel, and I could have been seriously hurt.

You followed good procedure. Anytime a shot doesn't feel, look, or sound right, check the weapon. Clear it completely and THEN check the barrel.

    You did good.

Were you able to easily push the bullet out of the barrel? That can be a bitch sometimes.

Would a good idea be to weigh the casing with the charge before you load it? It's just one extra step inbetween picking up the case to the press...

By doing this, you're confirming the weight, anything lighter, check it again for a charge?

I'm going to wiegh some cases tonight to see if the difference from case to case would be noticable. That said,it was a flat out mistake that I madeand will take steps to eliminate.

I use a small flash light to inspect each shell after powder has been thrown while they are in the shell tray to make sure it A) has a charge, B) didn't get double charged. It only takes a few seconds but it saves a lot of problems later.

Differences in case weight makes weighing loaded cartridges inconclusive. You're wasting your time unless you used a large charge of slow powder. Even then, you'll only identify suspects to disassemble and verify.

I have a hornady powder cop in the 3rd stage of my LNL to check my powder drop. that helps and even with that I still tend to eye it up with a pistol charge.
