Default I put the spring in backwards...

and scored the crap out of the 2 piece FLGR on my Springfield TRP.

I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention when I was reassembling my TRP. By the time I had cycled the slide twice I knew there was a problem. When I locked the slide back I could see the metal shavings and score marks all over the guide rod.

I disassembled the gun again, cleaned all the shavings out and reassembled, and I'm sure it's not causing any harm now, but it's ugly. Who knew the i.d. of the spring was tapered so much?

So, can some of my 1911 friends give me some recommendations? I'm definitely going to replace the guide rod, but should I just go stock and order a replacement from SA? Or is there a better set up?

Keep in mind this is a game gun, not a carry, so I'd like to keep the FLGR (I ditched the GR on my carry gun).

If it's a game gun you could always go Tungsten. Tungsten is more brittle than steel, so it could break and they do fail at a higher rate than steel ones, but they do weigh more and help reduce flip a bit. I have 24,000 rounds on one.

You could also look into the STI recoil master or the Sprinco guide rods. I think you need a reverse plug to run the STI RM in you gun...but you would have to ask.

If you like an integral buff the Cominolli is the way to go.

Thanks Lycan... I think. I went over to the STI site to checkout the recoil master, but now I want one of the 2011 models

I've never had a buffer system in a 1911 (or any other gun for that matter), so I don't know all that much about it.

I do have a friend that has a bunch of Beretta 92fs, and one has a tungsten rod in it, definitely can tell a difference.

You can play both IDPA and USPSA with a 5" Eagle. $1600 from Brazos.

If I have my choice, I'd set Your 45 up with a Tungsten rod. 13lb spring and a .090 CP Buff. I wager you'll be able to track the sights a lot easier.
