Two Day Shotgun Course by Randy Cain - Oct. 4 & 5 - Pittsburgh (F.I.R.E. Inst.)
We have had so many requests for a shotgun training course, we arranged to bring Randy Cain in for a week-end, on October 4 and 5.
We expect to hold the course at GPGC, but if they self-destruct again we have an alternative location lined up.
Because the course is two days, those who work regular schedules should not have to miss any work at all.
I took the "long version" of this course, and learned a lot. One who has never been formally trained on the tactical use of a shotgun (as distinct from hunting and sport-shooting) would benefit greatly from this experience. There are many myths and misconceptions that can only be put aside once a fellow has tried to operat the scatter-gun under these circumstances.
The complete course description follows:
-----------------------------------------------------
Two days of
TACTICAL SHOTGUN
With Randy Cain
SATURDAY OCTOBER 4 AND SUNDAY OCTOBER 5
AT THE GREATER PITTSBURGH GUN CLUB
– 25 Min. from Downtown Pittsburgh
This course includes 16 hours of instruction. It is designed as a first-level of formal instruction on the use of the shotgun in its antipersonnel role. Topics which will be covered include:
1) Gun Handling and manipulation: Proper mounting, aiming, manipulation and handling of short-barreled shotguns, use of the carry strap and correct procedure to load, manage ammunition and clear stoppages.
2) Mind set and the psychology of armed conflict.
3) Basic firing positions: Including introduction to tactical employment of them.
4) Fundamentals of tactical movement when employing a shotgun.
5) Patterning, trajectory, zeroing and sighting (and abatement of related myths and misconceptions).
6) Ammunition selection. A review of the types of ammunition available, external ballistics and wound ballistics, tactical advantages and disadvantages of shotgun ammunition.
Cost: $375.00. Includes instruction, targets and range supplies. Students to provide their own ammunition, personal gear and meals (there is a snack bar at the range). There will be an additional $20 assessed for range fees.
Course format: Lectures (approximately 2 hrs.), and live-fire exercises (approximately 21 hrs.). There will be one night shoot, Saturday evening. Each student will need 200 rounds of bird shot, 30 rounds of buck Shot, and 80 slugs. Using a variety of different brands is recommended for this course. Pumps or autoloaders - 12, 16 or 20 ga.
Instructor: Rangemaster will be Randy Cain. Mr. Cain is currently the Director of Cumberland Tactics, a professional shooting school located in Tennessee. He has provided professional firearms instruction for 12 years, having previously taught at the Yavapai Firearms Academy. Mr. Cain is a registered NRA Police Firearms Instructor, and has served both as a police officer and as a police SWAT team member and Training Officer. He is himself a graduate of numerous training schools, including the American Pistol Institute (Gunsite), Yavapai Firearms Academy, Thunder Ranch, and the FBI Advanced SWAT School.
Last day to enroll is Friday, Sept. 5 2008. Enrollment will be open beyond that date if we have 10 enrolled by 9/5/08.
Prerequisites: None. It is, however, expected students will have a basic familiarity with firearms.

Re: Two Day Shotgun Course by Randy Cain - Oct. 4 & 5 - Pittsburgh (F.I.R.E. Inst.)
Here's an update: Thursday, October 4.
This course is a "go." There is room for walk-ons, and the weather will be damn near perfect for this kind of course.
This is a TWO day course: Saturday and Sunday. It begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, and Randy usually knocks off at about 5:00.
If you want to walk-on, go to www.fireinstitute.org, click on "Shotgun I", and follow the directions there. Bring a completed application form, your carry permit or other credential and $375 to the Pitcarin-Monroeville Gun Club at 9:15 a.m. I will take care of enrolling you.
P.S. - Please note: the web site says there is a snack bar at the range. That was a different range. There is no snack bar, so plan to run out for lunch or BYO. Denny's and Kings are only a 5 minute drive from the range.
Lot's of people asked for this course, and here it is. It's not something that comes around every month.
