Required to provide SSN for handgun transfer?
I'm not naming the shop just yet. I plan to contact the owner to ask "WTF", but when I was trying to purchase a handgun from a private individual recently, the person at the shop told me I needed to include the last 4 of my social on the transfer forms. I pointed out that the forms indicated that it was optional, and the fewer people that have the last 4 of my social, the happier I am. She responded that she would be unable to complete the transfer if I would not comply.
I contacted the seller and we found another shop. Cost me $15.00 more for the transfer, but it was worth it to me.
Has anyone else run into something like this?Last edited by BradACP; August 31st, 2012 at 05:56 AM.

Re: Required to provide SSN for handgun transfer?
As you said, the forms themselves say it's optional. Sounds like the clerk was wrong to me too.

Re: Required to provide SSN for handgun transfer?
I've never put my Servant Serial # on any forms that didn't require it.
I have been asked to verbally confirm my number once before but I think it was only due to an error that occurred with PICS and I couldn't complete the transfer the same day.(long story, don't remember if I posted it)

Re: Required to provide SSN for handgun transfer?
Yes optional. I am not sure BUT I believe that there is a law that prohibits the use of social secuirty numbers for identification purposes.
When I purchase a firearm I like to ask for a "Phase Plazma Rifle in a 40 watt range", then when they ask for me to fill out the paperwork I tell them to just scan my CPU. If that is not funny then I don't know what is.
If I was not kidding I would be crying!
