Owning a firearm w/ a restraining order
Hi,
There have been a lot of burglaries in my city recently, I've been looking into acquiring my firearm.
My ex-girlfriend put in a restraining order against me, I believe it is a PFA (Protection From Abuse).
Will I able to purchase a firearm with a restraining order against me? Please let me know. Thank you.

In a word, no. If you actually read the PFA, you would have seen the part where it says you're federally prohibited from owning, shooting, or otherwise having access to firearms, including blackpowder guns.

Will I be able to possess a firearm once the PFA expires?

Not till it expire, usually 1 year or totally dismissed the person who iniated the POA cannot recind it,only a Judge and they as a rule will err on the side of caution, good luck.

Re: Owning a firearm w/ a restraining order
If the PFA is wholly unfounded, get a lawyer and take her to court. If the judge finds the PFA is frivolous he will toss it and that will make it tougher for her to keep trying to get these put against you.
If the PFA has any truth to it, then you must abide by the PFA which means you cannot buy a gun. It also means that you must get rid of ANY guns you already own. This can be done as simply as by having a trusted person store them for you so that you have absolutely no access to them. Your local police or sheriff have the formal paperwork to do this.Ron USAF Ret E-8 FFL01/SOT3 NRA Benefactor Member
