    Default Everything Skeet

    Hi All,

So I am looking for some help in regards to, well basically everything skeet. My husband is interested in the sport and I am interested in buying him a gun for his birthday and maybe even shooting myself. My questions for y'all is this:

    1) Recommendations on a skeet gun. Give me your list of say your top 5 that would include guns under $1000.
    2) The best gun shop to go to in the Pittsburgh area with a wide selection of skeet guns
    3) The best gun club in the Pittsburgh area that is accepting new members and might also include archery (for me)

My plan is to take y'alls recommendations and then take my husband to the gun shop and have him handle some of the guns. I know this kind of ruins the element of surprise, but I've read too many forums in here where people always reinforce the idea that the gun has to fit you for it to be right. I appreciate any help y'all can give me.

I will start by asking a question. Has he or you shot skeet or clay birds before?

If not I would suggest that you not start out with $1000.00 gun. Maybe get a Mossberg 500.

    And welcome to the forum..

First decide if he wants an over under or a semi auto, they both have advantages and disadvantages. I prefer over unders, mainly because I don't have to bend over and pick shells up off the ground, but they are generally more expensive. Semi autos have the benefit of reducing felt recoil. He will probably want a gun with a 28" or 30" barrel. In your price range, probably the only acceptable over under you will find is a used Browning Citori, there are many cheaper guns, but they will not hold up over time to the number of rounds a skeet shooter goes through. For semi autos, you can go with Remington 1100's and maybe some used Berettas. Make sure the gun fits him, this is the most important thing you can do.

@normanvin: He's shot once or twice with friends, but that's about it. I was just hoping to find something under $1,000 that wouldn't crap out after a short period of time, that's why I put $1,000. I've heard good things about Mossbergs, so I will definitely look at those. Thank you for the welcome and recommendation.

@blaster668: He's been looking at over/under as that is what he's heard is the best. I didn't realize they come in semi-auto, that is a good thing to know. I will definitely check out your recommendations. Thank you!

I recommend a semi-auto. Remington 11-87 or Mossberg 935. They are both in the $650 out-the-door price range. They are both field guns as well in case the skeet thing doesn't work out...!

Check out High Grade Shooters in Irwin. You can pick up a nice used name brand Skeet gun for around 1K.

By the way, my semi-auto suggestion was cost based. I have an 11-87 (basically a field grade 1100). I'd love an O/U shotty as well, but those Brownings I love are up in the $2000 range. I'm really curious about CZ's O/Us though:

    This.

If he gets serious about clays, he WILL want the over/under. Having two different chokes is very important in some other clays games.

CDNN has the Winchester 101 Selects for $1099 if he likes those.
