You will run out of ideas before you run out of options for AR's. You can add various calibers to a standard AR lower. What that will do for you is give you longer ranges to shoot and still use the same AR lower, so you won't have to buy a complete rifle. Out of all the MBR out there...the AR has the most spare parts available.

You do need to invest in certain specialized tools. That creates another cost up front. If you're interested, bushmaster sells an assembly video that is very detailed. Even if you never build one the video breaks the whole thing down into parts. You'll learn a great deal about the rifle.

It depends on what you want to do with it. If it's target shooting or hunting then just about any of the tier one or tier two manufacturers will suffice. If you're going to stake your life on the rifle then stick with Colt.
I'm too tired to go into detail about my choice of Colt. If you're interested in my opinion I'll post on it tomorrow.
