Legality of transporting long guns without using cases
I’ve read through several threads about transporting long guns in a vehicle and could not find exactly what I’m looking for. I’ve also read the state laws talking about transportation of firearms with no luck, unless I missed it. So, here’s my question.
Can one legally transport unloaded long guns to and from the range without using any kind of case?
The reason why I’m asking is for those special range days when half the arsenal comes along. Let’s face it; many of us probably have more guns than cases. Therefore, if one is heading to the range with 4 long guns, but only have 2 cases, than the remaining guns are pretty much just lying in the back seat.
Just to specify...
Driver has valid LTCFs
Guns are unloaded and ammo in range bag
Vehicle is a pickup truck with no trunkI would rather die in a shootout than get assassinated in a "gun free zone"

No requirement by law to have a case.
Carrying a long gun around in your hand might draw a couple 911 calls though

Not illegal, but be aware that some ranges require long guns to be cased when not on the line, so that you're not sweeping the whole line when you walk up behind them.

Re: Legality of transporting long guns without using cases
Thanks for the posts so far. The reason why I posted my question was because I don't want to break any laws, and many of the threads I've read that mentioned the transportation of long guns used the words "in a case". The posts usually linked state law which had no mention of the guns having to be cased. Therefore, I was confused.

There just can't be any ammo in the range bag WITH a gun. They must be separate, and as far away as possible. So, keep gun behind your seat, keep ammo on floor in some kinda container. Your good to go. Also, putting ammo in your glove box doesn't count. Not even if you lock it in there.

Do you have a source/statute for this? My understanding is as long as the ammo is not in the gun you are good to go. My understanding is based on threads like this.

Just want to make sure I have a full understanding of this.
