Do you have a range on your own property?
I would like to know what you have.
What county are you in?
How much land do you have?
How big is your range?
Construction of your range/backstop
Any local ordinances to deal with?
Pics would be good.
Thanks.MikeP

Re: Do you have a range on your own property?
Good idea for a thread. I've been wondering how far from Philly (and my job), I'd have to move, and how much land I'd have to buy to be able to target shoot on my own property without neighbors calling the law on me.

Re: Do you have a range on your own property?
I am interested as well. I am buying a home and 1 acre in Montgomery Co bordering 100+ acres of state game land.
I asked the seller if she ever heard neighbors shoot, she thinks they do.
Everybody is telling me I cant shoot, but they cant seem to tell me why or point to a law. I am having a hard time figuring out how I can prove I am legal shooting in my backyard.
Now back at my old home, Indiana County PA.... we just walked out side on anyone back porch and could shoot. Just a different social norm I guess....

Re: Do you have a range on your own property?
I live on the other end of the state, it’s a little more gun friendly over here. I own just under 5 Acres, I have two ranges on my property, a pistol range set up on a pavilion cement floor open on three sides with a roof. I use what is called a clam shell bullet trap to recover the bullets.
My second range is a 100-yard rifle range. I have set up behind the barn with a large hill for a backstop.
In my area between two Gun clubs within 2 miles, and I have at last count 5 neighbors I know of with small back yard ranges, Gun fire is a daily occurrence here.
I would check with the township or Municipality before setting one up.

Re: Do you have a range on your own property?
Lycoming County
280 ac
Size is what ever distance we want to shoot, out to about 400 yards. If more is needed, we shoot longer at another part of the Farm
Backstop is into a mountain/hillside
No local ordinances, we are zoned agricultural. Pretty much anything goes.
Be safe (and rural).

Does anyone know what the regs are in Monroe County for this? Or who to ask?

Re: Do you have a range on your own property?
I have an 82 yard range in my backyard in New Britain Township. My berm is about 5 feet tall by 8 feet wide. I only shoot suppressed subsonic .22's out of respect for the neighbors. There is a local law prohibiting discharge of firearms but I found a loophole that I'd rather not disclose on a public forum. You can PM me for details on that.
ETA: For those who are interested in the construction, it's basically a big pile of dirt that I made with a front end loader, and rode up and down it with a quad to pack it down and shape it. Then I covered the whole thing in wood chips (about a foot thick) to prevent ricochets. The wood chips disintegrate after about a year so I have to keep up with it. If you use a thick layer of screened topsoil, you might not need the wood chips. But since mine is fill dirt, there are rocks in it.
FWIW I have a little over 1 acre.Last edited by bac0nfat; June 8th, 2012 at 01:40 PM.

Google search for "Your Township Here, PA Zoning Ordinance" and you will find the laws of the land for your area. Most towns have their Ordinances & Codes online these days.
Also, see this NRA Guide for Shooting Range Design:
