Default Ruger 10/22 bolt hold open question...

With the original bolt release and the new modified one, neither time would the bolt hold open when pulled back with an empty mag. I recently purchaed this rifle (my first venture down the 10/22 road) and was wondering if anyone else has this?

I'm an AK guy and slamming shut when out is what I'm used to, but know this isn't traditionally normal. Did I put it together wrong or does it actually need to fire?

    TIA!

That is normal operation. Even if you fire it, it still wont lock open on an empty mag. There is a mod available to make it hold open on an empty mag, but it requires modified mags.

So the bolt auto release mod just ensures you don't have to hit the button in order to charge the rifle correct?

Yeah it allows you to just "sling-shot" the action closed and not have to fiddle with the control. Personally I just modified the stock bolt release with a dremel and got the same effect.

    Thanks, owe you a beer.

Didn't have time to fiddle with the dremel so Ijust ordered one. Besides, it gives me spare parts and I do love me some spare parts! :-)

Can't wait to take this out to the range but have been busy with bigger gun work this year. Currently experimenting with traditional mods to get it ready for Appleseed in Sept.
