Re: Are 1911s magical?
Good 1911's are a pure pleasure to shoot.
But try finding one new for $500 that you would be willing to bet your life on in sock form.

Re: Are 1911s magical?
Magical only in the way they multiply when yer not looking. Honestly, the thing about the 1911 is its adaptability. The gun can be set up to run loose and dirty for crappy environments, tight and slick for tack driving accuracy, or somewhere in between for reliable, accurate carry. Carrying condition one brings the gun into action w/ the flick of your thumb, very few moving parts to break, and can be configured from a 3" to a 6" long slide. Even the cheapest 1911 can be upgraded with minimal fitting ( for mil-spec ), and personalized in ways few other pistols can match. The. 45acp is popular and widely available, and possesses good stopping power. Everybody and their brother makes a holster that fits, and magazines are everywhere. You could say that America grew up with the 1911, and the 1911 grew to represent what America was about. So yes, you have the mystique that over 100 years brings to the party, and a gun that has seen it all and done it all. The 1911 didn't change the game, it created the game.

Re: Are 1911s magical?
Yea, but the cool thing is you can take a $500 1911 and a $1000 1911, work the internals on both for the same price (or do yourself for free) and end up with guns that feel like they cost $1500.
None of mine have pulled a rabbit out of a hat yet, but I'm pretty sure they're learning how.Last edited by harold63; May 19th, 2012 at 08:49 PM.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Rules are written in the stone,
Break the rules and you get no bones,
all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.

Re: Are 1911s magical?
I guess I am trying to decide if I should duplicate or replace caliber I already have or diversify first. I know that I am the only one who can answer that.
Also, I already have a $500 .45 so I wouldn't get a 1911 that is less than 900-1k or I would likely be left with the same what-if feeling that I have already.
Thanks for the replies

Re: Are 1911s magical?
Ive owned quite a few .45's and shot dozens of others, as .45 is my favorite round in the world. Nothing quite compares to a 1911, even if you look past the history of the gun. Mine is "just" a RIA tactical, however it is the most reliable (besides its initial cleaning I have not cleaned it in a year with no malfunctions) and most accurate hand gun I have owned/shot. And yes my sub $500 shoots just as well as ones that cost twice as much. I carry it daily and it sleeps on my night stand.

Re: Are 1911s magical?
Yeah, but that was before breakfast
OP, I LOVE 1911s. They fit my hand like they were made for me. I have a growing 1911 collection (is there any other kind?).
I can't think of another firearm that has gone 100 years virtually unchanged. Sure they've added some bells and whistles, but the mechanical aspects are pretty much the same as when JMB designed the thing.
“The 1911 pistol remains the service pistol of choice in the eyes of those who understand the problem. Back when we audited the FBI academy in 1947, I was told that I ought not to use my pistol in their training program because it was not fair. Maybe the first thing one should demand of his sidearm is that it be unfair.” — Col. Jeff Cooper, GUNS & AMMO, January 2002Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.
