Default Gun storage "advice" on Fox

    http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2012/...ntcmp=features

Does the NRA really recommend all firearms be stored unloaded?

The way this article sounds, you should separate the ammo from the guns and leave all of them "unloaded until ready to use".

I can see it now..."Mr. Intruder, if you'll just stay outside my bedroom for five minutes, I have to get my firearm ready to use. I'll be there in a jiffy...."

Yes, because the possibility of using a gun for self-defense isn't something that comes on their radar unless it's handed to them. Primarily it's hunting, with some competition shooting mixed in.

It's actually a major part of contention between many users here and the NRA. You'll hear "fudds" quite often. Politically, it makes sense, since ignoring self defense uses is pretty much the only way to remove the voter-repulsing violence factor of firearms while advocating their continuance.

That's not a bad rule in the general case, covering most of the firearms most of us have in our personal inventories. Firearm(s) we intend to use for defense inside of our homes necessarily are an exception. Not that they should just be left lying around, but our access needs for those firearms are significantly different than the general case.

Makes sense. I typically drain all the gas outta my car and water from my water heater until I need to go somewhere or take a shower

If a gun is intended for use as a self-defense weapon, then it should be ready for use at all times. Therefore, it is okay for it to always be loaded. Everything else should be unloaded.

I keep the Remington 870 loaded at all times as well as 1 or 2 pistols. Everything else is unloaded.

I don't know... if you only drove a car twice a year or took a shower twice a year, you might be inclined to do just that.

Don't "summer-only" motorcycle riders drain the gas out at the end of the season?

For me personally except for when I am in bed and my firearm is in the nightstand drawer unlocked I have mine on my person or locked in a cabinet.

Firearms not kept for defensive purposes are kept unloaded with ammo in a separate container.

NRA says too keep it locked up and unloaded. Yet I read the stories in American Rifleman every month about how people use their unlocked and loaded firearms to save their lives.

    Pfft... hypocrites...
