Get a Kahr if you want a small-ish single stack 9mm. They are proven, and the C-series can be had used for a decent price.
Get a Diamondback DB9 if you want a TINY single-stack 9mm.

I have no experience with the Shield, but I do like carrying the Bodyguard because of its small size; I can easily pocket-carry it wearing anything, and that's a big plus for me, especially when I have several larger guns. It's good for when you just want to pocket carry, have to carry a small gun so you don't print or because you don't have room, or as a BUG.

The Shield has been getting pretty good reviews, but it is a new product so you may want to make sure no bugs surface with extended use before buying.
Kahr CM9 is a safe bet. If you wanna spend the extra, the PM9 is its upscale equivalent.
Thr Beretta BU9 Nano is also making a good name for itself. Very slim and sleek, with no outside controls aside from the trigger.

Re: S&W Shield 9mm vs S&W Bodyguard .380
I used to have the bodyguard and just picked up a shield and put 300 rounds through it (mixing different target and defensive ammo) with no malfunctions. In my opinion the shield is a better choice. For me it is easier to grip, holds more rounds, is in 9mm, and the trigger is much better. In a holster i really didn't notice a difference between the two (shield with the flush mag) and I can put the shield in my pocket without any printing.
