Re: Pistol-How far and how accurate ?
The only way to get better is to push your limits.
Shooting bullseye has taught me a lot about trigger control and sight picture. Shooting at the 8 inch black area at 50 yards with iron sites, one handed, will really highlight flaws and that flinch you think you don't have.
Shooting under stress is another thing. Add a little competition pressure and people crack. I shot a defensive pistol match a couple of weekends ago. The last stage was a full sized hostage target at 10 yards. A lot of hostages took multiple hits.
Don't limit your self to "most self defense shooting occur within a few feet" state of mind. Maybe yours will be across the yard."The best investment on earth is earth."

Hitting a two liter bottle at 100 yards while standing shooting a Glock 23, four out of six shots is what I call good shooting. Shooting a bowling pin at 100 yards with any combat style pistol, glock, 1911, Sig, etc...4 out of five shots is good shooting.

I can't shoot worth a crap . No hits at paper plate at 15 yards. I will keep trying though , I love shooting.

Re: Pistol-How far and how accurate ?
I usually shoot at 8" circles anywhere from 0 - 25 yards.
Most defensive training is done whiten 7 but I do a little past that.
Slow fire target out to 25. At the range I belong to we have steel setup at about half and two thirds of the 25 yard range.
If not doing slow fire type shooting I run some drills from a pistol course. We have a shoot house at the range. I shoot with a friend and we randomly setup the shoot house and load each others mags with random dummy rounds to simulate failures and surprise mag changes.
