    Default AK fever...

    I think I've got it...

I'm on a budget of about $500. What is the best value AK for that kind of money? I don't know much about the various brands yet. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't looked at AKs in a while, but if you are looking for new in that price range I can think of only three off the top of my head:
    Wasr
    FEG AMD65
    Polish style AK74 from Century

Honestly, I'd go with the FEG if you can stand the wire stock and no cheekweld.

The only other thing would be to get a Saiga for around $400 and convert it later, IIRC you can get complete conversion kits for under $150 to de-neuter it.

Bought my yugo M70B1 for 500. Love the gun, I shoot it every weekend. Highly recommend it. No matter what... an AK is a good choice, buy it.

    cheers

I'm thinking of swinging by Insite on Monday. According to their website they have a few in stock.

Folks... You know that itch... that I've got to have it itch? Yeah... I held that Zastava Pap in my hand earlier today. I want one. I can't afford a quality AR, so... AK for me.

EDIT:: Forgot to add... Thanks for the info!

dont be afraid of WASRs just make sure they were built properly. Check for mag wobble and canted sights. Besides of excessive mag wobble I am very fond of my wasr 10.

Go to JG sales and get a Zatstava or go to Aim surplus and get a M+M Ak47 variant

Zastava Arsenal PAP is probably the finest factory-built AKM available to us in the USA, not quite the Zastavas that Mitchell imported in the 80's - but close enough. Even in single-stack config - a Yugo AK oozes quality.

Zastava has long put out a better quality AK than did the Russians, better than today's SAIGA.

Just as Arsenal is doing with the SAIGAs, Century is now importing PAPs in sporty thumbhole/single-stack configs - and then having them hi-capped/922'd for legality - hopefully using better subcontracters than the ones they hire to do the 922 work on the WASRs they bring in.

I've noticed the 922'd Zastavas have gotten scarce - good luck in your search.

Used Mak-90's are still available and one heck of a AK. Google them up and see.

    Good luck
